Nuuk TV had finished for the day, and apart from a single security guard at the gate, the docks were all but deserted. Petra suggested Efa tuck his camera deeper into his pocket as he talked to the guard, noting that her own was more discreet – a black camera against a black jacket. Efa agreed, and Petra waited outside the guard’s hut as Efa explained that he left his car keys in the office when his wife picked him up from work…

“In our car…” he said, drawing a frown as deep as Petra’s on the guard’s forehead.

But it wasn’t the cover story that made Petra frown, and before Efa could continue, the guard stopped him with a shake of his head.

“I’m to let you through,” he said, with a nod at Petra. “Both of you.”

Petra took a step closer to the hut, and the guard pointed at the camera hanging from a lanyard around his neck. There was an earbud in the man’s ear, and as she took another step into the hut, Petra caught another blast of Christmas music.

He’s switching channels, she thought, only to have her thoughts interrupted by the man’s voice in her ear.

“Do you see, now, Constable? Are you getting the bigger picture?”

“Did you take this man’s wife, too? Is that the bigger picture? Because if it is…”

“His dog,” the man said. “A puppy for his boy this Christmas. It cost a fortune. I took it. It’s a pretty thing. He’ll get it back when we’re finished.”

“And when will that be?”

“When you have finished distributing the goods, Constable,” the man said. “Just think, those containers have been sitting on the dock for months. Just because of a piece of paper, the wrong ‘t’ crossed, a missing dot from the ‘i’ and everyone suffers. You’re going to put that right. You’re going to deliver all the last presents. You’re going to be a hero, all over the news. Constable Jensen saves Christmas. And not just once. This isn’t your first time, is it, Petra?”

Petra opened her mouth to speak, but the man stopped her, reminding her that he could see her – if not from Efa’s camera, then the guard’s.

“First you uncovered the mystery of the mystery shopper in the mall, and you took your first shot at me.”

“I did what?”

“Then,” the man continued, ignoring Petra’s interruption. “Then you chased the gang of pickpockets. They were an investment. But you ruined it, and you did it with such arrogance, chasing them not in a car, but in a sleigh…”

The man cursed, pausing just long enough for Petra to say something, but she chose not to, as an idea of who the man might be formed in her head.

“Then you ruined another investment – a distraction of sorts. And again it was front page news, when your patrol car collided with that truck. I had plans for Maqqioq. You called him Tarandus, of course. But, either way, it doesn’t matter. You took him off the streets…”

“At his request,” Petra said, but the man ignored her.
